Dat Dere

I heard the great drummer, Andrew Griffith playing this Bobby Timmons tune in Dallas one night and was inspired by how interesting the hi-hat was interplaying with the melody. When talk with AG about this he suggested I check out the ‘In Person‘ album by Bobby Timmons featuring Ron Carter and Albert ‘Tootie’ Heath. The tune is super catchy and Tootie’s hi hat work pushes it over the top.

Jitterbug Waltz

Not exactly a jazz standard but always a pleasant surprise, ‘Jitterbug Waltz‘ written by Fats Waller is a tune that feels more like a time piece, or an era in itself than anything. While there are many great renditions of this tune none get close to the magic and dreamy state Fats Waller created with the original. With that in mind, we hope you enjoy our version.

Our Spanish Love Song

I’ve been a long time fan of the album Beyond The Missouri Sky by Charlie Haden & Pat Metheny. Growing up in Missouri and knowing both Charlie & Pat having Missouri roots I often wondered about the title. A couple of decades later and time spent outside of the show-me state I can say it makes much more sense. This is the album you put on when reflecting, going for a walk, in the background, or you can study every note and never come up short. That’s such a rare find in any music, to be able to ‘tune out’ while it plays or closely analyze it in theory, composition and performance and still find something new each recording. While the original is a perfect recording, I thought it would be interesting to try the tune with a quasi latin or Native American drum beat. This tune was tacked on at the end of the session and was a quick pass through and thankfully turned out to be one of my favorites from this date.

Beatrice

Beatrice is another all time favorite of mine. A tune that never really ‘resolves’ with traditional harmony and always keeps moving forward can make for some interesting options to improvise and interpret the tune. Sam Rivers wrote this for his wife and the deep emotion and love isn’t hard to feel. It’s a song that doesn’t need a lot of help in the arrangement department as it stands on it’s own very well.

Poinciana

Poinciana is a timeless piece of music to say the least. Many artists have recorded this however the Ahmad Jamal version on Live at the Pershing would arguably standout as the definitive version. We recorded this as close to the original as possible for a drum demonstration video which ultimately didn’t pan out, however we are left with a fun attempt to see what Ahmad Jamal, Israel Crosby & Vernel Fournier might have been up to in 1958 in that Pershing Lounge in Chicago, Il. Hope you enjoy.

Charlie Brown Christmas

Vince Guaraldi’s ‘Charlie Brown Christmas‘ album is a staple in most American homes and certainly is in ours. Having listening and growing with this album through the years my appreciation turned from thinking of it as a cute holiday album into a serious work of art. This album is another best case scenario of music serving an emotional function and also a deeply musical one. We did our best to recreate the bulk of it as a piano trio at the Grand Berry Theater in Fort Worth, TX. This performance was followed by a showing of both films and drinks for the kids and adults.
